Technology

Tarend designs, manufactures and commissions its own machines. From mechanical design to machine vision, from learning grading models to line automation, the components are developed in one place — and designed around each other.

3D design and engineering

Every machine is modelled in three dimensions before it goes into production. Part tolerances, movement envelopes and maintenance access are checked on screen; the line layout is built in 3D around the customer’s existing building. Clashes that would otherwise appear on site are seen at the design stage, which shortens installation and commissioning.

Machine vision

The produce rotates on its carrier cup and passes several cameras under controlled lighting, so its entire surface is imaged. Weight, size, colour and external quality are computed from those images. Internal quality is measured without cutting: concentrated light is transmitted through the produce and the spectrum of the transmitted light reveals the internal condition.

Technology · 03

Machine learning

Grading decisions come from learning models rather than fixed rules. The models are trained on images collected under real production conditions, which puts them ahead of rule-based algorithms on defects that are hard to tell apart, such as stem-end cracks, sunburn and russeting. Accuracy improves as the data set grows.

Automation and integration

Every unit from de-palletizing to palletizing runs under a single control architecture. The operator selects on screen which defect is rejected and which grade goes to which outlet; the same line can run with different quality thresholds for different customers and markets. Automatic chain tensioning, automatic lubrication and automatic cup washing reduce maintenance and downtime.

Robotics

Six-axis robots handle de-palletizing, bin unloading and palletizing. The robot is programmed around the crate dimensions and the pallet pattern, holding line speed steady at the points where manual work is heaviest and most repetitive.
